How Type Effectiveness Works
Pokemon battles revolve around an 18-type rock-paper-scissors system. Every attacking move has a type, and every defending Pokemon has one or two types. When a move hits, the game checks the type chart to determine the damage multiplier.
- Super effective (2×) — The defender is weak to the attack. Use these matchups offensively.
- Not very effective (½×) — The defender resists the attack. Avoid using these moves.
- No effect (0×) — The defender is completely immune. Never use these moves.
- Double super effective (4×) — Both of a dual-type Pokemon's types are weak to the same type.
- Double resistant (¼×) — Both types resist the attack, making it nearly useless.
Use the interactive tools above to explore any type combination. Select one or two defending types in the Dual Type tab, browse the full 18×18 matrix, or look up any Pokemon by name to see its exact weakness and resistance profile.
Memory Tips & Tricks
- Fire melts Ice and Steel — Fire is super effective against Ice, Steel, Bug, and Grass.
- Thunder hits Flying — Electric beats Water and Flying (think lightning striking birds).
- Psychic fears common fears — Bug, Ghost, and Dark all hit Psychic super effectively (fear of bugs, ghosts, and the dark).
- Dragon only fears itself and Fairy — Dragon is weak to Dragon, Ice, and Fairy.
- Fighting breaks Rock, Steel, Ice, Dark, and Normal — Fighting hits five types super effectively.
- Poison is defensive — Poison resists Fighting, Bug, Grass, Poison, and Fairy, making it a great defensive typing.
- Steel resists half the chart — Steel resists 10 types and is immune to Poison, making it the best defensive type.
- Normal + Ghost = 3 immunities — Normal/Ghost is immune to Normal, Fighting, and Ghost moves.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Pokemon type chart?
A Pokemon type chart shows how different types interact in battle — which types are super effective, not very effective, or have no effect against others. It's the foundation of Pokemon's rock-paper-scissors battle system.
How does dual typing affect weaknesses?
Dual-type Pokemon have two types, which can cancel out weaknesses or create double weaknesses. For example, Water/Ground is only weak to Grass (4×), while its Electric weakness is completely negated by Ground's immunity.
What does 4× effective mean?
4× effective means both of a dual-type Pokemon's types are weak to the same attacking type, causing quadruple damage. This is extremely dangerous and often results in a one-hit knockout.
Can a Pokemon be immune to a type?
Yes! Some types provide total immunity. Normal is immune to Ghost, Ground is immune to Electric, Flying is immune to Ground, Ghost is immune to Normal and Fighting, Dark is immune to Psychic, Steel is immune to Poison, and Fairy is immune to Dragon.
What is STAB in Pokemon?
STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) gives a 1.5× damage multiplier when a Pokemon uses a move that matches one of its own types. This makes type coverage crucial for building strong teams.
