Natures are a core game mechanic introduced in Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire (Generation III). Every Pokemon you catch or hatch has one of 25 possible natures, and that nature permanently affects how its stats grow as it levels up. Think of natures as a Pokemon's personality — it's not just flavor text, it has real gameplay impact.
Out of the 25 natures, 20 increase one stat by 10% while decreasing another by 10%. The remaining five — Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, and Quirky — are neutral and don't change any stats. You can check a Pokemon's nature on its summary screen, where the boosted stat appears in red and the lowered stat in blue.
How Natures Affect Stats
The 10% boost and reduction are applied to the Pokemon's final stats — after base stats, Individual Values (IVs), and Effort Values (EVs) are all calculated. At level 100, a Pokemon with an Adamant nature could have up to 40-50 more points in Attack than a neutral-natured Pokemon of the same species.
When choosing a nature for competitive play, the golden rule is simple: boost the stat you need most, and lower a stat you don't use. Physical attackers want Adamant (+Attack, -Sp. Attack), special attackers want Modest (+Sp. Attack, -Attack), and fast Pokemon often prefer Jolly or Timid to outspeed opponents.
Nature Mints
Introduced in Pokemon Sword & Shield, Nature Mints let you change which stats are boosted and lowered without actually changing the Pokemon's nature. The original nature stays the same for breeding purposes, meaning a Pokemon bred from a parent with an Adamant nature will still inherit Adamant even if you used a Modest Mint on it. This is great for legendary Pokemon and shinies that can't be easily bred for a better nature.

What are Pokemon natures?
Natures are a mechanic introduced in Generation III that affect how a Pokemon's stats grow. Each of the 25 natures increases one stat by 10% and decreases another by 10%, with five neutral natures that have no effect.
How do natures affect stats?
At level 50, a beneficial nature adds about 10% to the boosted stat and subtracts 10% from the lowered stat. For example, an Adamant Pokemon will have roughly 10% more Attack and 10% less Special Attack than a neutral-natured one.
Which nature is best for my Pokemon?
The best nature complements your Pokemon's strengths. Physical attackers want Adamant or Jolly, special attackers want Modest or Timid, and defensive Pokemon benefit from Bold, Impish, Calm, or Careful. Use our chart above to find the perfect match.

Can neutral natures be useful?
Neutral natures (Hardy, Docile, Serious, Bashful, Quirky) are generally less optimal in competitive play because they miss out on the 10% stat boost. However, they are perfectly fine for casual playthroughs and are sometimes used on mixed attackers that need both physical and special stats.
Do natures affect anything besides stats?
Natures also determine which flavor of Pokéblock or Poffin a Pokemon likes, and influence its taste preferences in Pokemon Contests. However, in battles, natures only affect the two stats shown in the stat screen.
