How Damage Is Calculated

Pokemon damage in Generation 5 and later is calculated using a precise mathematical formula that determines the exact damage range a move will deal:

Damage = floor(floor(floor(2 × Level ÷ 5 + 2) × Power × Attack ÷ Defense ÷ 50 + 2) × Modifier)
  • Level — The attacker's level (1–100). Higher levels deal more damage.
  • Power — The base power of the move being used.
  • Attack / Defense — The attacker's Attack (or Sp. Attack) vs the defender's Defense (or Sp. Defense).
  • Modifier — A combined multiplier that includes STAB, type effectiveness, weather, critical hits, and a random factor between 0.85 and 1.0.

This calculator uses the exact Gen 5+ formula with IVs set to 31 (perfect IVs) for calculating stats. The random factor is represented as a damage range showing the minimum and maximum possible damage.

STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus)

STAB is a 1.5× damage multiplier applied when a Pokemon uses a move that shares a type with one of its own types. For example, a Fire-type Pokemon using Flamethrower gets 50% extra damage. This mechanic encourages building teams with diverse type coverage while rewarding type-matched moves.

Dual-type Pokemon get STAB on two types, giving them a broader offensive presence. The damage calculator automatically detects STAB based on the selected move's type and the attacker's types.

Type Effectiveness Multiplier

Type effectiveness is the most important damage modifier in Pokemon. When a move's type is super effective against the defender's type, damage is doubled (2×). If both of a dual-type Pokemon's types are weak to the same move, the damage is quadrupled (4×).

Conversely, not very effective moves deal half damage (0.5×), and Pokemon with two resistances to a type take only quarter damage (0.25×). Some types grant complete immunity (0×) to certain move types.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Pokemon damage calculated?

Damage is calculated using the formula: Damage = floor(floor(floor(2 × Level ÷ 5 + 2) × Power × Attack ÷ Defense ÷ 50 + 2) × Modifier). The modifier includes STAB (1.5× if the move type matches the user's type), type effectiveness (0×–4×), weather effects, and a random factor (0.85–1.0).

What is STAB in Pokemon?

STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) gives a 1.5× damage multiplier when a Pokemon uses a move that matches one of its own types. For example, a Fire-type Pokemon using Flamethrower gets 1.5× damage.

How do EVs (Effort Values) affect damage?

At level 50, every 8 EVs add 1 point to a stat. The maximum of 252 EVs adds 31 points. EVs are crucial in competitive play to maximize a Pokemon's offensive or defensive potential.

How does weather affect damage?

Rain boosts Water moves by 1.5× and weakens Fire moves by 0.5×. Sun boosts Fire moves by 1.5× and weakens Water moves by 0.5×. Sandstorm and Snow do not directly modify damage but add chip damage each turn.

What does a critical hit do?

A critical hit multiplies damage by 1.5× (2× in earlier generations). It also ignores the attacker's stat drops and the defender's stat boosts, making it a powerful mechanic.
