Match the generation to your goal
The right generation depends on what you want from the run: nostalgia, mechanical depth, or sheer variety. Competitive-style players get more from later generations with richer movepools, while challenge runners often prefer older games with steeper difficulty curves. Before filtering your rolls, decide which of those three experiences you are chasing. The generator supports all nine generations, so the only wrong choice is not choosing.
Generations I to III for the pure challenge
The early games are slow, physical and special damage split by type rather than by move, and full of beloved designs. Challenge runs here feel harder because quality-of-life features do not exist to save you. Kanto and Johto rosters are small, so random pools produce familiar faces often, which suits nostalgia runs. Hoenn doubles the weather mechanics and gives water and ground types room to shine.
Generations IV to VI for depth and story
Sinnoh broadened the competitive backbone with the physical and special split, making random teams genuinely viable. Unova went all-in on a fresh regional roster, so a randomized run there feels like playing a new game. Kalos introduced Fairy and Mega Evolution, which reshuffles every matchup you thought you knew. These are the generations to pick when you want mechanics to be the story.
Generations VII to IX for variety
Alola brought regional variants, Galar added Gigantamax, and Paldea opened the world entirely. Modern rosters mean random pools draw from over four hundred species per region, so duplicate results are rare. These generations suit long-form challenges and group events where variety keeps everyone engaged. If your group argues about power levels, modern games also have the clearest balance patches.
